(A)I Wonder: Reflections on Ethics and Imagination at Digital@UNGA
On 26 September 2025, ALFIE proudly hosted an Affiliate Session as part of Digital@UNGA, the flagship global platform powered by ITU and UNDP that highlights how digital innovation connects, empowers, and transforms lives. Our session, “A Digital Tool Towards Understanding Ethical and Legal Applications of Artificial Intelligence,” brought together world leaders, innovators, and changemakers at UN Headquarters and online to explore one of the most urgent questions of our time: How can we ensure AI serves humanity responsibly — and inspires us to imagine better futures? Affiliate Sessions share the same mission as Digital@UNGA’s Anchor Event: to spotlight how digital can connect, uplift, and empower.

ALFIE at the European Researchers’ Night 2025
Last Friday, the ALFIE project proudly participated in the European Researchers’ Night, an annual event celebrated simultaneously across Europe with the goal of bringing science closer to society and inspiring the next generation of researchers. This year, ALFIE was present in three different locations, reaching audiences of all ages through interactive activities and discussions: Across all three locations, the atmosphere was full of energy, curiosity, and genuine interest. For ALFIE, the European Researchers’ Night was not only an opportunity to share our work, but also to listen, learn, and connect with people who are directly impacted by scientific progress. We are deeply grateful to the

MA Dissertation on Biases in Automatic Speech Recognition
We are delighted to share the findings of Biases in Automatic Speech Recognition: Accessibility and Inclusion Barriers in Speech-to-Text Systems, the MA thesis defended by Arunachala Luca de Tena. Inspired by the UAB use case in ALFIE, this research explores how speech-to-text systems can create accessibility barriers that affect the digital inclusion of certain user groups. The study is framed within the European legal framework and the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation principle of “leaving no one behind.” Using a qualitative approach, three representative systems (WhatsApp, Apple, and OpenAI) were examined, alongside a literature review of key bias factors such as accent, age, language, background noise,
