The UAB will present ALFIE at Festival Inclús – Barcelona International Disability Film Festival, an event dedicated to promoting audiovisual works that address functional diversity. The Festival aims to broaden public understanding of disability from new perspectives while fostering accessible audiovisual practices. It also plays a key role in bringing cinema closer to audiences who often encounter barriers to cultural participation. The Official Selection includes short and feature-length films, both fiction and documentary, as well as awards for audiovisual productions created by organisations in the field. On 26 September 2025, ALFIE proudly hosted an Affiliate Session as part of Digital@UNGA, the flagship global platform powered by ITU and UNDP that highlights how digital innovation connects, empowers, and transforms lives. Our session, “A Digital Tool Towards Understanding Ethical and Legal Applications of Artificial Intelligence,” brought together world leaders, innovators, and changemakers at UN Headquarters and online to explore one of the most urgent questions of our time: How can we ensure AI serves humanity responsibly — and inspires us to imagine better futures? Affiliate Sessions share the same mission as Digital@UNGA’s Anchor Event: to spotlight how digital can connect, uplift, and empower.

Last Friday, the ALFIE project proudly participated in the European Researchers’ Night, an annual event celebrated simultaneously across Europe with the goal of bringing science closer to society and inspiring the next generation of researchers. San Lorenzo de El Escorial, July 21, 2025 — Thirty-nine students from ten European universities are meeting this week at the Exe Victoria Palace Hotel to tackle an ambitious question: how can artificial intelligence serve society in a fair, ethical and socially responsible way? The course, titled “Una Europa’s Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Challenge for Social Welfare,” is part of the Complutense University of Madrid’s Summer Courses and is organised and funded by Una Europa, Bosch and the ALFIE project. On July 3rd, 2025, the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Mental Health (ICAIMH 2025) hosted a powerful keynote titled “When Machines Decide: Ethics and Responsibility in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.” Delivered by Dr. Juan Antonio Recio García from Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the session explored the ethical implications of delegating critical decisions to intelligent systems, particularly in mental health contexts. The talk addressed key issues such as algorithmic transparency, professional oversight, and developer responsibility, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding human dignity in an era where AI technologies are increasingly present in clinical and therapeutic settings. We are excited to share that Pilar Orero presented the ALFIE project during the WSIS+20 High-Level Event 2025 held in Geneva, Switzerland. Organized by the UN’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU), WSIS+20 commemorates two decades of international efforts to create inclusive and people-focused digital societies. Pilar contributed to Session 229 – Media and Education for All: Bridging Female Academic Leaders and Society, which highlighted the intersection of academic research, media, education, and societal equity.
